Genesis 3 – A New Beginning
by Barry Woodham
There is a machine intelligence left over by the Harvester’s actions that is settling solar systems and obliterating life, in its expansion of territory. An alien people sent self-replicating probes to planets orbiting nearby stars and never had the chance to settle these worlds. The sentient survivors of the war against the Harvester form a strange alliance with one of the Collectors to try and defeat the Janis probes. This being becomes the ‘Farmer’ that spreads sentient life so that it can absorb and store them for a purpose of its own. In the past, one hundred thousand light-years away from where the Harvester slept uneasily something watched the wormhole activity with curious senses. The plan had been to cannibalise the replicated probes and the mining machines when the Janise had developed their own interstellar ships and had arrived at the prepared world. The Harvester had exploded their sun before they had any chance of doing this. Toarvaks had slipped through the life barren systems it dominated and out of sight using wormholes. They were seen and recorded with the information sent back. The central intelligence had no knowledge of wormhole technology as it relied on psychic power to open one. So it patiently waited and built a flytrap.
